An Octoroon
Actor's Express
887 W. Marietta St. Suite J-107 Atlanta, GA 30318
Billed as "part period satire, part meta-theatrical middle finger," Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Obie-winning An Octoroon is a raucously irreverent riff on a 19th-century antebellum melodrama. At a plantation on the brink of foreclosure, a young man takes a fancy to the mixed-race daughter of the estate's owner, while an evil swindler schemes to buy the girl for himself. This incendiary adaptation by Jacobs-Jenkins was lauded by The New York Times as "... this decade's most eloquent theatrical statement on race in America today" and comes to the Atlanta stage courtesy of Actor's Express.
