The Producers

Fox Theatre
660 Peachtree Street NE Atlanta, GA 30308

Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks' classic cult comedy film. The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends. With a truly hysterical book co-written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan (ANNIE) and music and lyrics by Mr. Brooks, The Producers skewers Broadway traditions and takes no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an "equal opportunity offender!"

"...It can feel labored and silly, with jokes that lost their luster several decades ago. But when done right, as it is here, it's a droll, inventive comedy. This version is certainly a lot more polished than the clunky touring one of eight years ago. It takes a sourpuss not to enjoy a musical where little old ladies and their walkers break into a tap number onstage."

"...There is eye candy aplenty with a chorus line, and the Swedish yummy named Ulla (Lara Seibert) who seems to get everybody's attention, especially Leo's. There are loads of show business puns and references in the show. One never wishes another good luck on an opening night. That's one of those no-nos akin to never saying the name of one of The Bard's shows in a theatre. So maybe it would be better to say "break a leg." Except, that in this case the lead of the show does so and has to be replaced at the last minute. Damn! The lead was guaranteed to ruin the show and his replacement is such a schmuck that he doesn't get it, and the show becomes a smashing success."
